Carousel, carousel, carousel. It's pretty much common knowledge that my preference for musicals lies within the "1980" rule. Namely, there are relatively few musicals that I get very attached to that were written before 1980. There are exceptions, of course -- West Side Story, A Chorus Line, 42nd Street -- but sadly, Carousel is not among these exceptions. However, I once had a drama teacher, Carlos Santos, who told me that every play, no matter how poorly written or directed, is worth the experience. So I did the show -- and really did have a great time doing it. My appearance as Enoch Snow, though not quite in my natural character range, demanded that I expand upon my typical repetoire. I like to think that I did this successfully, in order to portray a real (though pathetic) character. This particular performance also brought me into an entirely new state as an actor: I joined with that small group of dramatic folks who can honestly say that they have thrown muffins around onstage. My muffin catcher and dear wife, Carrie Pipperidge (portrayed brilliantly by another of my favorite leading ladies, Marti Dembowitz), was a real sport about the whole muffin ordeal, and didn't complain one bit, even when a muffin found it's way from my arm into her lovely face. Carousel was performed in the spring of 2004, in the Bluett Theatre at St. Joseph's University.
