At the end of the first act, Michael’s suitemates convince him to join them at a trendy New York dance club. Unable to let go and enjoy himself, Michael sits at the bar with a Shirley Temple, watching while everyone else seems to have the time of their lives.

That I reach the sky
CLUBBERS
Aah…
Forget the future’s cry
And let the darkness die…
(A Slutty Girl approaches Michael at the bar.)
SLUTTY GIRL
Hey there, Hottie – Spare a dollar?
MICHAEL
I’m a penny short-
MATHEW
(cutting in)
I’m taller!
(Mathew leads the girl away, then looks back over his shoulder at Michael.)
MATHEW (cont’d)
Coming?
MICHAEL
No thanks.
It isn’t hard to see
There’s nothing here for me…
(The Clubbers continue to dance with increasing stamina and agility. Mathew returns to appeal to Michael once more.)
MATHEW
Come on, man… Just one time.
(Michael looks back out at the crowd, and rolls his eyes, smiling.)
MICHAEL
Oh, why the hell not?
(Michael joins Mathew and leads the crowd in song and dance, and is revealed to just as good a dancer as anyone else there... he only had to decide to join in.)
ALL
Wanna touch the stars
Wanna seize the day
Wanna laugh at tomorrow
And dance tonight away

All I dare
